Baksheesh & Brahman: Asian Journals, India (Campbell, Joseph, Works.)

Campbell in India
Before I read Baksheesh and Bramhan, all I knew of Campbell was that he was an author of formidable intellect and also engaging wit (if the print version of Moyers series is to be believed)with a deep understanding of Oriental faiths. Campbells' account of his encounter with the land of these faiths - India - is at once insightful of the man and India in the 1950s. Confronted by the actual India - ancient, prudish, theieving, an emerging nation seeking a semblance of pride, low on self esteem, spiritual - Campbell is all at once the fastidous Westerner at odds with a culture he has admired from afar, charmed by its exoticism and occasionally getting bang on and incisively the actual reality of India. This book is an easy read and essential for anyone who has ever admired Campbell's work. Also a must read for anyone who wants to hold up a mirror to the new Indian nation and how far and how less that nation has travelled in the 50 odd years since. Campbelll's acerbism on fellow American travellers make for marvelous diversions.

One small observation and this must stem from being an Indian - that India is a hospitable nation is clear from this book. I am sure a lot of Indians would attribute it to Campbell being white, but there is something in here of hearts and houses being thrown open to a stranger.

You'll read this within 2 days!
When I read this book, I actually did it because of I had to read a book for school. But when I actually started read it, I realized what a well-written, good, nice book it is. It is about a kid called Barra, he seems to know an angel and thinks the angel could help a man that lives at his place and who is to die of illness. But actually the angel helps Barra, maybe in another way that Barra thought. The best thing on this book is that the dialogues are written in spoken English, or Scottish. I liked it a lot.

Beaded Tassels, Braids & Fringes

An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf!!
I bought this book after looking at it for about 20 seconds. I was not disappointed. Its' main topic is making tassels out of beads, however in the course of describing, making, and displaying her creations in this book, there arise a lot of different and unusual tricks, techniques and ways with beads. This book is great if you want to make beaded tassels; if you work with beads and need some new ideas and inspirations; or, if the creative well is running dry and you need to graze in some new territory. I do work with beads in peyote, sculptural peyote, Ndebele, brickstitch, squarestitch and wired floral work. I found the instructions in this book for the beading techniques quite good, however, if you have no experience in the above techniques and intend to learn the techniques from this book I don't think that will work. You do need prior knowledge with at least peyote stitch and brick stitch to make many, but not all of the tassels described. Other than that, which is more of a heads up than a critisism, I would highly recommend this book to any and all beadworkers and creative persons everywhere. An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf.

Beadwork Creates Necklaces

Beautiful Necklaces
The necklaces in this book are beautiful. I can't wait to try them. I think, though, that if you are a beginner this isn't a good book to start with - you should have some beading experience unless you are good at following written directions without diagrams for each step. Certainly worth buying if you have some experience - like opening a present with each page!

The Beggarstaff Posters: The Work of James Pryde and William Nicholson
Published in Hardcover by Barrie & Jenkins (January, 1993)
Author: Colin Campbell
Average review score:

Getting started...
This books deals with the revolutionary aspect of the career of Sir William Nicholson, the period in which he and his brother-in-law Jonathan Pryde produced work under the name "the Beggarstaff Brotherhood. The book is excellent and was able to find examples of the commercial work these two remarkable men produced is gratifying. The use of line and color was probably nothing short of a revelation, considering just how overblown most contemporary work was. The only flaw to this otherwise excellent book is the lack of examples of this sort thing, the better to illustrate just how revolutionary the Beggarstaff Brothers actually were. Still this is a marvelous study of two innovative and influental artists.

Bernard Shaw and Mrs. Patrick Campbell
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Authors: Bernard Shaw, Mrs. Patrick Campbell, and Alan Dent
Average review score:

A Fine Romance
This is the correspondence between George Bernard Shaw, the famous playwright, and Beatrice Campbell, a famous actress at the time, over the course of forty years. Though both were married to others, they seemed to have loved each other. There is no evidence of a physical affair, but it definitely was an affair of the heart.

The play, "Pygmalion" (which was the basis of the musical "My Fair Lady") was inspired by Mrs Campbell. Eventually she did play the part of "Eliza" on stage, but it was only after much pleading by Mr Shaw. When she finally did finally play the part, she was wildly successful with it.

This book is a wonderful look at the lives of these two famous people and their love for each other. Read it and enjoy.

I'm sorry this book is out of print!
This is a BEAUTIFUL book on kitchen gardens, with illustrations by Tasha Tudor, and wonderful relevant quotes. Lots of people are interested in kitchen gardens, and, of course, there are other books on them. But they'd have far to travel to compete with this one--combining solid information with delicious illustrations and various other charming tidbits. They would do well by reprinting this one--I wish they could.
